CWI Part C with D1.1: on-screen PDF, no word search

Part C tests whether you can apply a welding code, and for most candidates that code is AWS D1.1. It is open book, but the book is a PDF on the test-center screen with word search switched off. AWS's own D1.1 endorsement description also allows a bound printed copy. Either way, the skill being tested is finding the right clause quickly and reading it correctly.

Where
Prometric CBT. The D1.1 codebook is provided as an on-screen PDF (word search disabled; learn the bookmarks). A bound printed D1.1 copy is also permitted (D1.1 endorsement description Rev 10.14.2025 and AWS Exam References Guide 1 Aug 2025).

What the domains mean in practice

  • Qualification, fabrication and inspection are at least 25% each: procedure and welder qualification, workmanship and fabrication requirements, and inspection and acceptance criteria.
  • Reports and records and materials and design make up smaller shares.

How to prepare

  • Learn the layout of your D1.1 edition: which clause covers design, prequalification, qualification, fabrication and inspection, and how the tables and annexes are organised. Use bookmarks the way you will on exam day.
  • Take the free check and time yourself on each question. Speed at finding a clause matters as much as knowing the answer.
  • Use the edition your exam uses. Tests in 2026 use D1.1:2025, and a retest must use the same code as your original exam.
  • We cite clause numbers only and never reproduce D1.1 text. Use your own licensed copy.
