How the flashcards work

  • The deck has 77 cards across seven topics: 12 on welding and cutting processes; 11 on welding symbols; 10 on nde methods; 12 on metallurgy terms; 12 on discontinuities; 10 on safety; 10 on math formulas.
  • Tap a card to flip it. After you see the answer, mark it "I know this" or "I don't know this yet".
  • Set Show to "Only cards I don't know" to drill your weak pile. Cards you mark known leave that pile.
  • Shuffle changes the order without changing which cards are in the deck. The topic filter lets you work one area at a time.
  • Your marks are saved in your browser with no account. Nothing is sent to us.

Cards explain each point in our own words and cite no code text. Where a card gives a number, such as a temperature or a formula, confirm it against your governing code, your procedure or the material data before you rely on it at work.

Worked example 1: a formula card, step by step

Card: "What is the arc energy formula, and what is it for 25 V, 200 A at 10 in/min?" You flip it and check your arithmetic.

  • Volts times amps is 25 × 200 = 5,000 watts.
  • Multiply by 60 to turn seconds into minutes: 5,000 × 60 = 300,000.
  • Divide by the travel speed: 300,000 ÷ 10 = 30,000 J/in, which is 30 kJ/in.
  • The next card asks for heat input with k = 0.8. That is 0.8 × 30 = 24 kJ/in. If you said 24,000, you slipped on the units.
  • Work the same numbers with other speeds in the CWI math calculator.

Worked example 2: a 15-minute round on discontinuities

You set the topic filter to discontinuities and flip through the first six cards.

  • Porosity and slag inclusion you know cold, so you mark both known.
  • The lack of fusion card asks why it is dangerous. You said "it is just a surface flaw", flip it and see it is planar and often buried. You mark it "I don't know this yet".
  • Undercut and overlap blur together. You mark overlap still learning.
  • You switch Show to "Only cards I don't know". Two cards come up and you repeat them until both leave the pile.
  • You finish with the free 10-question check to see whether the causes hold up inside scenario questions.

Where to go next

Cards build recall, and questions test whether you can use it. Read how the CWI Part A exam is weighted, build the weeks with the CWI study plan builder, and test your symbol reading on the welding symbols quiz. CWI Part A flashcard questions

Are these the real CWI Part A exam questions?

No. Every card is written for this site in our own words, to cover the same fundamentals topics AWS publishes for Part A. We never use real or recalled exam items. Use the cards to build recall, then test yourself with the free 10-question check.

Are flashcards enough for Part A?

Cards build the recall that a closed-book test needs, but Part A asks scenario questions too. Drill the cards until you know them cold, then check yourself on questions. The free 10-question check scores you by domain so you can see which deck to repeat.

Will my know and don't-know marks be saved, and does it work on my phone?

Yes on both. Your marks are stored in your browser on the device you use, with no account, so they are there when you come back. Clearing your browser data or switching devices starts you fresh, and the reset button clears them any time.

Drill CWI Part A terms, symbols, NDE methods, metallurgy, discontinuities, safety rules and formulas with original cards. A study aid; your governing code and the exam body's current published content outline decide what is required.
