CWI Part B measurement workflow

Part B measurement practice has two linked tasks: obtain a defensible reading and judge it against the correct specification. A good lookup cannot rescue a reading of the wrong feature. This workflow brings together the course modules on measuring welds and judging replicas. Start with the free Part B check, or work through the public measurement lesson and practice set.

Check anything you rely on against your own licensed code book and the edition your AHJ enforces.

Name the quantity before selecting the tool

Write the application, weld or joint type and the requested measurement on your practice sheet. Depth, height, leg size, throat, length and offset are different quantities. Selecting the tool from the word “weld” alone leaves that distinction unresolved.

What your practice task asks forWhat to establish first
Fillet sizeThe dimension being specified and the face shape relevant to the gauge reading
Undercut or reinforcementThe reference surface and whether the requested quantity is a depth or height
Fit-up or misalignmentWhich surfaces define the gap or offset
An affected lengthWhere the condition starts and ends, as well as its measured size

The public sample lesson teaches the individual gauge readings. Use the manufacturer's instructions for the tool you are practicing with; a feature on one gauge should not be assumed to exist on another.

Welding Inspection and Discontinuities

A convex fillet weld replica is checked with a leaf-type fillet gauge. The drawing calls for a single fillet size. The vertical leg fits the 3/8 in blade and the horizontal leg the 5/16 in blade. What size is recorded?

Check the reading before opening the specification

  1. Establish the reference surface and check the tool's zero as appropriate to its design.
  2. Place the tool so it measures the requested feature, with the scale readable and the contact visible.
  3. Record the reading with its units and location. Keep the observation separate from the acceptance decision.
  4. If the reading is inconsistent, check alignment, contact and zero before taking another reading.
  5. Confirm that the units match the reference you will use. Convert deliberately when they do not.

For study, note which stage caused an error. Reading the scale incorrectly calls for a different correction from measuring the wrong feature. The weld gauge trainer helps practice readings; the fillet weld calculator helps check geometry. Neither supplies the acceptance criteria for your application.

Move from the observation to the governing criterion

The next course module asks you to identify the application and find the applicable criterion before judging the replica. Keep this lookup as a separate step in your notes:

  • Identify whether the task concerns structural, pipeline or pressure-piping work.
  • Locate the relevant section, table or annex in the supplied Book of Specifications.
  • Check the conditions and notes that determine which criterion applies.
  • Compare the recorded quantity and units with that criterion.
  • Record the reference and the reason for the decision.

Use the Book of Specifications for Part B practice. A remembered D1.1 limit is not a substitute for the criterion supplied for the practical task. No specification text or acceptance table is reproduced here.

Use a record that exposes the first wrong step

Give your worksheet columns for feature, tool, reading and units, location, reference and decision. Complete the reading columns before the decision column. On review, mark the earliest column that needs correcting.

If the feature is wrong, repeat tool selection. If the reading is wrong, repeat the gauge exercise. If the reading is right but the result is wrong, repeat the application and criterion lookup. This makes the next practice session specific instead of repeating a whole set without a clear objective.

For timing, supplied materials and booking, read the Part B exam guide. To get fluent with each instrument first, use the Part B tool kit checklist. For practice across the three parts, use the CWI practice overview.
