CWI Part C D1.1 navigation workflow

CWI Part C navigation practice should begin with the question the document must answer. A qualification lookup, a fabrication lookup and an inspection lookup need different routes even when all three concern the same weld. This guide connects the course modules on code organization and qualification. Use the free Part C check, then practice the routes in the public D1.1 navigation lesson.

Check anything you rely on against your own licensed code book and the edition your AHJ enforces.

Classify the task before looking for a number

Write the requested decision in a few words: find a definition, check a prequalified procedure, establish a tested qualification range, check fabrication or evaluate an inspected weld. Then identify the conditions that might change the route, such as the connection type or whether the work concerns an existing structure.

The course's public sample uses D1.1:2025. The clause references below use that edition as well. Check the Part C edition guide and your examination reference information before applying this map to another edition. This page gives references and study prompts only, without code text or tables.

The map is an entry point. Finding a familiar heading is not enough to establish the answer. Read the relevant scope, subclause and table notes in your own licensed copy. For the most common Clause 8 lookup, D1.1 visual acceptance criteria, explained shows how to pick the right column and row.

Every answer comes with a full explanation.

Keep three qualification questions separate

The course treats prequalified WPSs, WPS qualification by test and welder or operator qualification as separate modules. Preserve that separation in your practice notes:

  1. Prequalification: identify the conditions you must check before treating the WPS as prequalified.
  2. Procedure qualification by test: identify the supporting test record and the range the task asks you to establish.
  3. Performance qualification: identify whose qualification is being checked and which performance record and limits matter.

A route to the right clause can still end at the wrong subject. Write “procedure” or “performance” next to the reference before you compare a range or variable.

To practice the comparison itself, work through the WPS and PQR review drill, which sets invented WPSs against their PQRs and welders' WPQs against jobs.

Practice the full lookup, not just the destination

For each study topic, record the task, starting clause, final reference, conditions checked and reason for the answer. Time the whole lookup if you are working on speed. Track whether a slow result came from choosing the wrong starting clause, searching within it or checking the final conditions.

Word search is off in the on-screen reference, and some PDF navigation features may be off too, so practise with the contents and clause numbering instead of relying on search or bookmarks. The Part C exam guide covers the reference arrangements and format.

Turn the result into the next study session

Use the public navigation lesson and practice set to check route selection. If the starting clause is repeatedly wrong, review the map. If the clause is right but the answer is wrong, review scope, conditions and notes. If the error concerns a qualification record, return to the matching qualification module rather than repeating unrelated inspection questions.
